The Real Trap of Consumerism
Support Our Changing Climate on Patreon: www.patreon.com/OurChangingClimate
In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at the real trap of consumerism. Specifically, I dive into why consumerism is not actually the real cause of exploitation and the climate crisis, but instead a symptom of capitalism. Capitalist overproduction drives companies and corporations to create false needs and desires, which leads to overconsumption. We need to shift our attention away from consumerism and overconsumption and towards overproduction.

The word OBSOLETE is always thrown around so even if you have perfectly working things, people will still buy the newer ones. Before, if your phone has a bad battery, you just replace the battery but now you replace the phone. Before, your car can outlive you, now it is based on software updates.
Ah yes drink my brand name drink and you too can be thin and a smiley happy person 🤦♀️🤷♂️
"Consume, consume, consume." reminds me of John Carpenter's They Live
I was told 🦤 dodos went extinct because they just weren't smart. But humans doing it makes a lot more sense
They are Manufacturing Consent.
Tech products are more disposable than the non tech products they aim to replace. Want to reduce your carbon footprint? Stop buying tech gadgets.
So, I have a confession to make. I went for a walk with my teen daughter this evening, and it was a lovely walk. On the way home, I 'treated' myself to a a bar of Tony's Chocolonely - a brand I chose to support because of their anti-exploitation, fairly traded philosophy (and also because of a documentary I watched about other seemingly less ethical brands), but the chocolate IS really good though. What was said about personal values resonated much, and how consumerism is tied into our beliefs. I have another problem, as a stay-at-home mum to a child with special needs, I've run through the gamut of trying to make some kind of income from home, while my partner works full time. I've been trying print-on-demand, that goes against my values, but fits my circumstances. It's not actually working out that well for me, and I would like to remove myself from adding to unnecessary consumerism. We don't need more stickers, phone cases and cheap t shirts. How do others in a similar position find something to work around family life, and that is ethical? I'm not asking anyone to solve my problems for me, just asking in the spirit of community. P.S. I'm 50, and in the last two weeks received 'thanks but no thanks' emails for evening cleaning and kitchen assistant work. I have worked before in office admin, and retail, just not for a very long time.
I think the voice of this channel is the good news guy on IG
Socialism is the root of all evil.
That’s why back then things use to last but when they realize they won’t make money they offshored it and now we buy expensive things that don’t last 5 years. Disgusting. Don’t tell little me to do my part for the environment it’s the big corporations that are destroying our earth. I do what I can by removing things I have to buy over and over buy once and done is my goal and reuse as much as I can. The less u want the less you give up your time for money for things that don’t mean anything in the end. Really good video. I have cut out buying stuff, my house has what it needs and I think really hard now what to buy. This video is great.

But the framing as only being like a lifestyle choice is a deliberate strategy to both reduce it's impact and try to discredit it as a movement.
:'( I'm really sad
Net Zero is a scam because their is no Anthropogenic Global Warming. We are still in an interglacial warming period.
The greedy corporations are causing climate change and we get the bill for it.😮

The book "The Overstory" by Richard Powers investigates this topic. It doesn't give easy asnwers.
LoL😅😅😅... Anti-white much... The greatest generation mostly white men made America great
no, Materialism, consumerism, plutocracy, and bureaucracy are the ones to blame, capitalism is only a system that replaces pure bartering, while also adding new ideas such as. investment. this allows for small businesses to get a start while benefiting the investor. larger payments. capitalism allows for larger, more complex payments opening new possibilities. selection. this removes companies that simply don't sell products or services that aren't wanted or needed by society. capitalism is a good system as seen by these benefits, the negatives of capitalism are mainly just materialism, consumerism, plutocracy, and bureaucracy, remove those and you have solved most of the problems of capitalism, while socialism is a good system, in that it allows for greater equality, its benefits can be just as easily accessed by capitalism, while also negating an risk of falling into communism, which is just straight up slavery, and something that capitalism has over socialism is that it allows for all three of the basic human rights "life, liberty, and property" to be fulfilled, while socialism denies the right of property, which is not a selfish right, as your property includes your home, your food, precious heirlooms, books, and things that you made, like art or music.
We're already too far gone 😢
Covid shutdown made me realize work makes me buy. I can’t spend time so, i spend money. When I’m shut down i felt satisfied with my life.
Hobbies help with that too c: you have no time for consumerism if you like to draw or paint or sing or dance etc
We are basically being incentivized to survive in todays society
liberal claptrap this is
This video is great until it proposes solutions-ruminant based regenerative agriculture is the way to go.
One thing that helps especially with online shopping is any time I'm thinking about buying i put it in the "shopping cart" but i don't purchase it and i sleep on it. Usually the next day i realize it's something i don't actually need. They do this thing where they mention how many people are looking at the same product or that its limited in quantity but its a tactic to get you to buy. Don't fall for it.
Consumerism comes from loneliness and purposelessness. Not to mention having no hobbies. Having little interests also does not help.
You group never seem to get sick

When I was young, I didn't know, thought about, or introduced to consumerism. I became aware of it when I began to realize having more free space at home / work makes me happier. It's easier to maintain and more efficient with having less clutter. That's how I "fight" consumerism.
